Smart Broadband, Inc. recently launched it’s new product for wireless broadband access. It’s an extension of SmartBro product. But instead of using the Canopy-based system to connect to the internet, the new service will utilize the mobile network’s High Speed Data Packet Access (HSDPA) service.

The new service, dubbed as “Plug It, is a USB-based modem that can easily be plugged to a laptop or a desktop computer. According to the press release given by Smart, the new service will operate at the 384 to 768 kps speeds. According to Abe of Yugatech, Smart is being careful with the speeds they promise to the public since Smart Telecoms., Inc. has not yet covered the whole country with HSPDA infrastructure. Thus, they gave the users the rated speed for 3G systems.

pub.jpgLiving in a Wifi city like Davao brings a lot of opportunities. Anywhere you go, anytime you want, you can have access to multiple FREE WiFi hotposts across the metro. Almost all coffee shops, restaurants and hotels offer free access to their wireless network.

But how about disco bars, can they have wifi too?

Let’s take Matina Town Square as an example. MTS is one of the first FREE WiFi hotspots in Davao City. One famous disco pub in MTS is the Impit Purok. Now technogeeks can go to pubs without leaving their lifestyle. Same situation applies to San Diego. San Diego nightlife would never be fun without the availability of WiFi Hotspots in the city.

WiFi LogoA lot of people believed that WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity. I even watched shows in TV, write-ups in news papers and magazines, and other sources in the internet which defined wifi as wireless fidelity. Though the term wifi is similar to hi-fi or High Fidelity, the former does not follow the latter’s definition.

According to Phil Belanger of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the term WiFi was coined to refer to the WLAN devices which uses technology based on the 802.11 standards. It was Interbrand Corporation who developed the name WiFi for the Wi-Fi Alliance. The term was used because it catches more attention that using the technology’s original name which is IEEE 802.11 Direct Sequence.

Ateneo de Davao - A WiFi University

Ateneo de Davao University may be the only WiFi University in Mindanao.  Last October 2007, the university installed several WiFi hotspots within its college campus in Jacinto Street, Davao City.

I’m one of those many students who were glad about this project.  We’ve been paying a lot of bucks for our internet fees, yet, we were not able to fully utilized it.  One should first make a reservation before a student can access the internet which can only be done at the 4th floor of the university library.  But now, anyone with wifi capable device, can access the internet in almost any place in the campus.

But then, there has been rumors that the university is trying to find a way of limiting the students’ internet usage.  My teacher said that they (university officials) are now on the process of making the wifi hot spots work similar to Globe Wiz wherein a user must use his own account to enter the network.

The wifi zones that I was able to explore are the following:

There might be more which I have not yet discovered.  Please leave a comment if you know some.
