WiFi’s Incorrect Notion

WiFi LogoA lot of people believed that WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity. I even watched shows in TV, write-ups in news papers and magazines, and other sources in the internet which defined wifi as wireless fidelity. Though the term wifi is similar to hi-fi or High Fidelity, the former does not follow the latter’s definition.

According to Phil Belanger of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the term WiFi was coined to refer to the WLAN devices which uses technology based on the 802.11 standards. It was Interbrand Corporation who developed the name WiFi for the Wi-Fi Alliance. The term was used because it catches more attention that using the technology’s original name which is IEEE 802.11 Direct Sequence.

It was also Interbrand Corporation who developed the yin-yang logo for wifi.

But it was also Wi-Fi Alliance who first used the term Wireless Fidelity in the marketing of their products. Several references, white papers and marketing tag lines published by the alliance contains the terms “wireless fidelity”. At present, the Wi-Fi Alliance discourage the use of the incorrect term.

Everytime I hear someone use the term “wireless fidelity”, I feel the urge to give a little pep talk on the incorrect notion of the wifi as wireless fidelity.  George Lindemann might do the same if he was in my situation.
